Mission

The Calgary Youth Curling Association is dedicated to getting youth involved in the sport of curling, providing opportunities for young curlers to develop skills and learn the game.

About the CYCA

The Calgary Youth Curling Association is a volunteer not-for-profit society created to provide the infrastructure and means to give Calgary and area youth the chance to learn and participate in the sport of curling. The association aims to attract youth to the sport by developing, organizing, and facilitating youth curling activities and programs in the Calgary area. The Calgary Youth Curling Association gives youth the opportunity to play an organized sport in a safe environment that promotes sportsmanship and helps begin a journey that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Several key and integral groups are involved in coordinating and supporting the association, including curling clubs, schools, volunteers, coaches, instructors and the CYCA Curling Coordinator and the volunteer-run board of directors.

Special Announcement

The Calgary Youth Curling Association would like to acknowledge the passing of two of our founding members from 1991. William Dalton (Bill) Hans and James Gordon (Jim) Murray. These two gentlemen were giants in the world of Calgary junior curling.

Bill Hans coached many competitive curling teams and still has several banners hanging in the Calgary Curling Club. He was instrumental in starting competitive U18 and U15 curling championships in southern Alberta. Both these age groups are now represented nationally. Bill is a past president of the Calgary Curling Club. He was inducted into the Southern Alberta Curling Association Hall of Fame in 2007 and then into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in August 2023 for his work as a Builder, with Youth Curling. He was instrumental in setting up the CYCA as well as the Calgary Association of Youth Curling Instructors and Coaches (CAYCIC). Bill was 92.

Jim Murray was a fixture in the instruction of juniors and school kids. It was not unusual to see Jim on the ice, by himself, with 4 or 5 sheets of young learners. Jim is responsible for the rule that allows a coach to only be responsible for one team at championships. He would often show up to Playdowns coaching 3 or 4 teams – which caused a problem when more than one called a timeout at the same time. There was a room in the basement for slider repairs. His car's trunk was crammed with brooms, while bags of clipboards filled the back seat. And he never went anywhere without his trusty green stopwatch. In 2003, Jim's dedication was recognized with a Calgary Booster Club Honoured Athletic Leader award. As a co-founder of the CYCA and CAYCIC, Jim was working for the future. Jim was also inducted into the Southern Alberta Curling Association Hall of Fame for his work with junior curling.

The Board of the CYCA would like to thank these men for the organization and vision that allows us to continue their legacy into the present day. Curlers and parents will be forever grateful.
