The Curler's Corner CYCA Sunday League is designed to bridge the transition between club development sessions and participating in the competitive provincial junior curling tour. This league is open to any youth curler between the ages of 9 - 19 who have a minimum of 1 year curling experience. This league is ideal for curlers who are not ready for provincial competition, decide that is not the route they want to take, want more ice time to improve their chances at the provincial bonspiels, or just want to play more games and meet more people. It really is for all youth curlers.

Location - The CYCA does not have a “home” club and therefore we also do not play all of our Sunday League games out of one location. We are a moving or traveling league, which means that the players experience playing and reading the ice at a number of different clubs in Calgary and the surrounding area. The location schedule is announced prior to the beginning of the season.

Timing & Schedule- The Sunday League is run in 3 rounds. Curlers may join for rounds 1, 2 &3, for 2 & 3, or for just 3. Each round is typically 5 games. Games are played at either 10:00 am or 1:00 pm, on the rare occurrence a team is unable to play during the regular time which would result in a make up game forcing a double header one week or the arrangement of an off site game between the coaches. Games are not set by the number of ends but rather are allotted two hours to complete. At the 1 hour and 50 minute mark of the game a bell or announcement will be made for the final end. At this time teams are no longer permitted to begin another end. Game matchups will be announced 1 week prior to the beginning of each round.

Scoring Format - Teams are divided, according to skill level and experience, into groups of 6 to complete round robin play over the course of the 5 weeks per round. The groups will be announced 1 week prior to the beginning of each round. The winning team for each game will be awarded 2 points while the non winning team will receive 0 points. The Sunday League does not allow for tie games so in the event of a tie the two teams will do a draw to the button to determine the winner. The winning coach submits the score following the game. For rounds two and three, there will be a shuffle in the groups as the two lowest scoring teams from the A group are moved to the B group and the 2 top scoring teams from the B group move up to the A group; this same move happens in all of the subsequent groups. Please note that if teams join for rounds 2 & 3 or just 3 they will be placed in the new to CYCA group regardless of their curling experience. The League winning team will receive a banner to display in their club. The group winners will receive recognition

Coaching - Each team is required to have a coach that is out on the ice with them during games. The CYCA understands that not all youth will be confident to call their games independently therefore we allow on ice coaching providing you are not in control of the rock. Coaches in the CYCA do not require any specific certification however we do encourage anyone who wishes to expand their coaching =knowledge to check out the coaching courses available through Curling Alberta. (Certification is required for participation in the provincial curling tour) Coaches submit the score for the winning team of each game, they also nominate curlers for the Sportsmanship recognition program.

Extra Fun - In addition to the fun of curling we will also be having 3 parties, the “Button Board” and the Sportsman recognition program all to celebrate the youth and the game of curling.

Season and Fees - 2024-2025 season is Oct 20, 2024 to March 16, 2025. Rounds 1, 2 & 3 registration is open until Sunday 10:00 am Oct 13, 2024, 160 + $200 volunteer bond per curler Rounds 2 & 3 registration is open on Oct 20 until Sunday 10:00 am Nov 17, 2024, $130 + $200 volunteer bond per curler Rounds 3 registration is open on Dec 1 until Sunday 10:00 am Jan 12, 2024, $100 + $200 volunteer bond per curler

Volunteer bond - CYCA runs on volunteers and therefore to ensure that we have all positions filled each parent or guardian must provide a post-dated cheque for $200.00 per curler. The cheque should be made out to the Calgary Youth Curling Association and dated March 31 of the applicable season. This cheque serves as a volunteer bond. If you do not achieve the minimum volunteer points by March 31 of the current year, the cheque will be cashed and the amount forfeited to the organization. Cheques must be received by November 1 of the current season, either by mail or in person. If the cheque is not received by the deadline, play will be suspended for the associated curler. If you need cheques, you can request a batch of 5 or 10 from your bank, either free of charge or for a small fee.

Volunteer Commitment - Each curler is required to earn a set number of volunteer points by March 31st of the current season. In the event that the CYCA casino days fall after this deadline, the points can still be applied to the current year or you may carry them forward to the next year. Required Volunteer Points

1 Curler - 3 rounds =20 points, 2 rounds = 15 points, 1 round = 5 points

2 + Curlers - 3 rounds =25 points, 2 rounds = 20 points, 1 round =10 points

Points can be earned through various roles that support the CYCA’s operations. This policy is designed to ensure that all families contribute to the smooth running of our organization and to share the responsibility of volunteering fairly. Our goal is to build a stronger sense of community, not to create any discomfort or penalties. We welcome volunteers from all family members—parents, grandparents, siblings, and others—so feel free to enlist help from anyone who can support your curler’s volunteer requirements.

There are many ways to earn points, whether it’s by taking on a board position or helping out at a single event.
